Every artist should have their own website, to show case their art, yet despite all their creativity, many struggle with the taunting task of creating one. Hiring professionals to do it is expensive and you never really get what you asked or paid for. Doing it yourself will how ever give you the results you desire, but how does one get started with building a successful art website?
Making money as an artist can be very difficult, especially if you are just out of art school and getting started, or someone who has later on in live decided to pursue their passion for art, like I did! You can read my story here: About ArtByHeart
You are here because you have realized selling art online is an effective way to gain customers and promote your art and all things beautiful!
How to Sell Art Online For … How To Get Started With an Art Website?
First we must define what a successful art website is. We need to consider the unique goals of an artist, before we examine how to create a website.
What do you want to achieve with your website? What is it’s main goal? Do you want to sell your own art and crafts in an online store?
Or perhaps just to create an online presence for your customers, so they can find your easier? Maybe you work or own a gallery and you want to promote its services?
Or maybe like I have done, you want to run a blog about your art and all the other things you are passionate about?
We also need to ask ourselves how much effort are we willing to put in creating quality content?
This is especially taunting with an artist as a lot of time will go into photographing, measuring and figuring how the best ways to show case your art.
What earning goals do we want to set for our online business? Who do we want to sell to? Do you want to close your atelier or gallery and only sell online?
Once we have clear goals in our head, we can start examining the ways to build our website. There are three main ways to choose from and we are going to examine both with their pros and cons.
If you just want to read about the easy approach, you jump straight to:
The Technical Route – How To Build a WordPress Website From Scratch?
So you know something about website programming, great! Then you know exactly what to do. This is what your plan looks like:
You buy a domain
Purchase a hosting platform
Install and setup your database, email server, WordPress and Apache.
Install your plugins
Configure your spam and hacking guards.
Upload the themes you want to use and customize them.
Create your email accounts
In about 1 week you should be on your way to creating some great content! After that, it’s easy going, your environment should only take around half a day of maintenance every week. But hey, you got exactly what you wanted, hopefully!
OK, OK, I lost you there, right? You are an artist and don’t really care that much for technology! It can be very taunting to start building your first website. So let’s examine other ways of of completing this task.
The Outsourcing Website Design and Hosting Route
You could take the outsourcing route. Many artists do and at first hand it looks like the easy and perfect solution. I mean all you have to do is:
Find a company to create a website
Explain them what you actually want from a website
Review their design
Find someone else to setup the hosting environment for you
Find someone to take care of the hosting for you
Find someone to teach you how to market your website
Any artist who has tried to route, knows that the steps 1-3 actually become a vicious and costly cycle, which can take really long time to complete.
After all your are trying to explain YOUR vision to someone else, you are a perfectionist! You want your website to reflect YOU and YOUR VISION about this world!
Oh boy, that must be really hard. You see it clearly in your head, can sketch it, paint it, but cannot get someone to understand what you are really after.
The changes are that you will have to either try out several companies to get what you want or accept a result that is below your artistic standards and not exactly what you wanted.
You then have to find at least one other company, if not two, to execute steps 4 and 5. And even then the last task will somehow fall on your because even if you hire a company to make you appear first on the Google search engines for people looking into purchasing art, you are still not guaranteed a commercial success.
How ever the main problem with this approach is that you will be using a lot of money and much longer time than you first anticipated. Hence this approach is not optimal.
The Lazy aka Time Efficient Route
So how does one build an art website without any knowledge about programming or willingness to spend all this time and money in setting it all up?
I can imagine that you are just burning with desire to take your creativeness to the next level and expand your business to an amazing online presence?

Are you feeling anxious and suffering from stress related health problems? This article will discuss how with how just 20 minutes a day spent meditating can improve health.
If you are convinced that meditation can benefit you and you are ready to make a chance in your life, you can jump strait to my Relaxing Meditation.
If not yet convinced meditation is for you, read on to learn about the 10 benefits from meditation. If you want to learn more about the origins of yoga meditation, read my article about Yoga Sutras
Experience The 10 Benefits From Meditation
Meditation provides practitioners with many benefits, both mental and physiological. They have been extensively researched and many studies have been published in the subject.
The following are commonly agreed among the researchers to be the 10 benefits from regular meditation practice.
1. Meditation provides Stress Relief
Almost everyone suffers from stress of some degree in todays society. The stress can be physical, mental or emotional and is caused by the various factors in out work and home environments.
A constant stress causes a whole lot of different kinds of health problems, or rather symptoms of stress, some of which are listed below. Often if we solve the cause of the problem with stress, the other medical issues disappear as well.
Stress can greatly reduced by either removing the source of stress, which can often proof very difficult, or teaching the body and mind to deal with the stressful situation with techniques such as meditation.
Deep breathing from the diaphragm practiced during meditation, is very efficient in relaxing the mind. When you reach a deep meditative state, you clear away the information overload that builds up every day and contributes to your stress. The emotional benefits of meditation can include:
Gaining new perspective on situation that cause stress
Building stress management skills
Focusing on the moment
Reduction of negative emotions and thoughts
2. Meditation Helps With Anger Management
Anger is a completely normal, healthy human emotion. But when it gets out of control and turns destructive force, it can lead to problems at work, in personal relationships and poison the overall quality of your life.
It makes you feel as though you’re at the mercy of an unpredictable and powerful emotion. Meditation techniques can teach you methods for anger management.
It teaches you self-awareness, so you can recognize the signs of anger in time and taking action to calm down and deal with the situation in a more constructive way.
Meditation for anger management will increase your self-control and ability to calm your mind, by focusing on something positive, before it is too late and the anger takes over your actions.
Daily meditation will also introduce more calm, more positive mind set and reduce the stress levels in the body which in return will lessen the reasons for anger.
Meditation is being successfully used to rehabilitate violent criminals and offered at some schools as an alternative for detention to reduce the agitation which causes the pupils to misbehave in the first place.
3. Meditation Increases Concentration Levels
Poor concentration is a common complaint by pupils, student and adults alike. It prevents us from studying new materials or performing a difficult task at hand.
It is most common with tasks that are tiring and boring or when we are tired and under stress. In the worst case the lack of ability to concentrate means failure in studies or getting fired from a job.
Regular meditation increases the blood flow into the brain, which is a key for increase in the ability to concentrate. Additionally diverse meditation techniques teach us how we can help improve our focus to the task ahead as well as maintain it for prolonged periods and hence enhance our performance.
Also read my article about how certain essential oils can help you to improve your concentration:
Many people todays modern society suffer from depression and different anxiety disorders due to the emotional pressures and need to succeed in life. Most of the times the doctors attempt to treat them either with therapy or drugs, with every little success.
How ever meditation the most effective tool battling depression whether it’s situational, caused by external events, or organic, caused by chemical imbalances in the brain.
With daily meditation, you can naturally boost both serotonin and norepinephrine neural transmitters to healthy “depression resistant” levels.
Many people suffering from anxiety and panic attacks, where once again the body’s sympathetic nervous system is responsible for “fight or flight” response, find relief from meditation due to it’s calming and reassuring effect on the whole body.
5. Meditation Lowers Blood Pressure
High blood pressure, also called hypertension, is caused mostly by stress, unhealthy diet, lack of exercise, hereditary causes, age and excess weight.
It is dangerous because it makes the heart work harder to pump blood out to the body. It also contributes to hardening of the arteries, to stroke, kidney disease, and in extreme cases to the development of heart failure.
Many people need to take more than one medicine to reduce hypertension. However, the side effects, such as headaches and weakness, are severe and effect the lives of the patients more than the hypertension itself.
The deep restful state achieved during meditation, sparks biochemical changes that help the body and mind reach a more balanced state, in turn triggering the body’s own self-repair mechanism, mainly by stimulating the telomerase enzyme.
6. Meditation Reliefs Asthma Symptoms
Asthma is a chronic inflammation of the lungs. When the sufferer encounters something that triggers his asthmas the walls of the airways tighten and the lining starts to swell, causing coughing, wheezing, tightness of the chest and shortness of breath.
Medical treatments, corticosteriods, for asthma are effective, but carry with them a host of very unpleasant long-term side effects.
A complement, and potentially a replacement, to inhalers could be meditation. People often panic when they have an astma attack – the inability to breathe leads to fears of dying.
By learning to use meditation where once focuses on relaxing the body, specifically the breathing passages, the body starts to relax and the airways open, making breathing easier again.
Furthermore the deep meditative breathing opens air passages, heals inflammation and improves airflow preventing future asthmas attacks.
7. Mediation Provides Insomnia Relief
The causes of insomnia can be overly aroused sympathetic nervous system, causes can be found in things such as use of stimulants like coffee, tea and drugs, habits as going to bed too late and excessive use of computer and bad dietary habits.
However, most of the time people who suffer from insomnia have difficulties to relax their mind enough in order to fall asleep due to mental and emotional stress. Their mind often dwells on worries and the inability to fall sleep. This can become a vicious circle leading to exhaustion and stress.
Meditation let’s the mind wonder and releases it from the task of worrying creating calmness by soothing the sympathetic nervous system and releasing the sleep hormone melatonin.
Further more deep stages of meditation reduce the strain on the body caused by the sleep deprivation as meditation gets rid of toxins in the brain same way than REM cycles do during sleep.
8. Meditation Strengthens The Immune System
Weakened immune system is a cause for us catching things like common flu and stomach infections, but some people also suffer from so called autoimmune diseases such as:
Diabetes type 1
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)
Multiple sclerosis (MS)
In the case of the autoimmune disease the body’s own immune system attacks some parts of the body, such as bowels, pancreas or tendons.
Meditation increases the electrical activity in the left side of your brain, the part which acts as a command center for your immune system, network of cells, tissues, and organs that work together to protect the body
Increased activity in this part of the brain helps to boost the immune system making it work more effectively producing more white blood cells, leukocytes, who fight against infectious diseases and foreign invaders.
Furthermore meditation reduces the symptoms of autoimmune disease, although it is unable to repair damage already down like in the case of type 1 diabetes.
9. Meditation Improves Memory
Meditation has proven very effective in both improving acute memory loss, such as caused by a brain injury as well as helping sufferers of Alzheimer decease and old age related memory problems.
As well as controlling our ability to concentrate, brain’s cerebral cortex also controls our memory. Blood flow into this region provides improvement specifically in short term and long term memory.
It also helps to grow new neural path ways, as the old ones got damaged in case of brain injury or deterioration from age-related los, in the brain which increases the accessibility of our long term memory.
Meditation has also increased children’s and students ability to memorize educational material in an effective manner. This of course is also linked to the students ability to concentrate better in their studies.
10. Meditation Provides Pain Relief
Meditation can provide many highly effective techniques dealing with both acute and chronic pain, which increase in strength with the continuous practice.
I myself suffer from cancer and use meditation as one of my techniques of dealing with pain. I have written a whole separate article about Pain Management with Meditation. It introduces the reader with the techniques used for pain relief meditation and provides a sample meditation.
The two most meditation types used for pain management are:
By Distracting The Sufferer From The Pain.
There are several meditation techniques that teach you to concentrate on other things, such as very pleasant thoughts and forget about the pain. These powerful techniques are often used with childbirth and with acute sport injuries by the athletes.
2. Providing Pain Relief With Alteration Of Brain Structure
Sounds incredible, right? It has been proved by the studies that regular meditation practice alters the parts of the brain that deal with pain, hence changing the brains perception of the pain.
My Personal Experience of the Benefits of Meditation
I practice meditation almost daily with few exception. My meditation sessions last anything from few minutes to several hours, depending on my mind set, psychological and physical need and the time I have available.
Meditation has provided me with a lot of benefits during my fight against cancer. Biggest help I have experienced is in the form of being able to rid myself of the anxiety which was caused by facing my own mortality.
Besides this I use meditation for pain management and to improve the symptoms of the cancer such as insomnia and manage the pain. Please read my personal story about
Daily meditation practice has also helped me improve my immune system and hence to deal with the side-effects caused by the chemical cancer treatments, which I received before I made the switch to alternative medicine.
As a meditation coach, I cannot recommend daily meditation strong enough for anyone who is dealing with any of the problems above. Let me know if you need any guidance in getting started, I will be more than happy to help!

In our ultimate search for happiness, we often forget that we need to love ourselves, before we can love anyone else. I always tell my friends: You need to learn to love yourself, just the way you are, with all your flaws and weaknesses. This is what the beautiful poem Laughing Hearts by Charles Bukowski speaks to me about.
Your life is your life Don’t let it be clubbed into dark submission. Be on the watch. There are ways out. There is a light somewhere. It may not be much light but It beats the darkness. Be on the watch.
The gods will offer you chances. Know them.
Take them. You can’t beat death but You can beat death in life, sometimes. And the more often you learn to do it, The more light there will be. Your life is your life. Know it while you have it.
You are marvellous The gods wait to delight in you.
“The Laughing Heart” Charles Bukowski
Charles Bukowski has always been one of my favorite poets. I love his poems as much as his ability make fun of his dysfunctional lifestyle, his drunkenness and womanizing ways with a healthy dose of self–irony, instead of wallowing in self-loath.
His poem “The Laughing Heart” has always whispered to me louder than all the people shouting to me, trying to push me here or there, making choices for me thinking they knew better to which direction I should head and how I should live my life.
Just The Way You Are
Your life is your life and nobody else’s. Don’t let anyone tell you what you suppose to do. If you listen to your own heart, you can’t go wrong, you are good just the way you are!
Your know deep inside that you should be allowed to make your own mistakes, because it is you who has to live with the consequences. You are the one who has to just drag yourself from one day to an other without really living at all.
You have been pushed into the corner, denied the possibility to make your own choices and live by them. Your are standing your back against the wall and you you feel the urge to escape, but are clueless how to break free.
Picture in your head that somewhere in this world there is a street that bears your name. Now imagine that it is up to you to turn the sign until it points into the direction that you want to take.
If you are unsure to which direction to point it at, test it out. Don’t sit and wait for someone else to tell you what to do or a divine intervention to push you onto the right path. You will end up getting stuck in the same old rut.
Take a peek around the corner and test the waters with your toe tips, the water will appear cold at first because of the chance in temperature.
Sit and wait for a moment, wait for your body to adjust. If the temperature becomes bearable after few minutes, jump in the deep end, feet first.
Do not hold back, go in all the way. Remember that most of the time, it’s possible to turn back if we don’t like the direction our life is taking. If it leads us into the darkness instead of light.
There is always a way out and you are heading towards it! You can already see some light in the end of a dark tunnel, that’s why you started your journey in the first place!
Sometimes the chance comes easily, naturally like it would always have been this way. Other times we just have to travel a longer distance that we thought to get there.
Imagine that you are standing at the short of a lake. The sun is setting and you are staring at the amazing display of colors. They blend into the clouds and the water is reflecting them playfully. The beach in front of you appears black and colorless, the distant horizon is filled with deep shadows.
The closer you look, the brighter the colors appear. You are amazed by the shapes the clouds are forming, how prominent the orange and red colors have become! All the shadows and the darkness, which filled half of your vision seem to have disappeared into the gorgeous display of beauty.
Look again. This time even closer. You notice that the sky is on fire and the sea has turned into liquid gold. You suddenly notice the sailing boat that appeared from out of nowhere and has taken a central stage in this display of beauty. You feel jealous of the view the people on the deck are having right now.
Now imagine you would swim across the lake to that sailboat. You would climb aboard and stand on the deck watching the burning golden show of light straight in front of you. It’s so bright that you feel it burning your skin.
Wasn’t it worth the final push, even if you almost drowned out of exhaustion, to get there in time, before the sun set into the horizon, before the darkness closed in and surrounded you.
You Are Marvelous Just The Way You Are
Smile, look yourself in the mirror. See the difference it makes. How it softens your face and softens out the wrinkles. See that light shining in your eyes? That off feeling of peace in your heart? It’s called happiness and I bet it’s there to stay.
Look back to your journey taking delight in the things you learned on your way. Think about how you got up every time you fell and continued instead of giving up and returning where you came from. Your heart aches remembering all the people you met on your journey.
Some held your hand, made your heart skip a beat and put a twinkle in your eyes. Others pushed you to the side, shouted insults at you in their hurry to get ahead. Some stayed with you walking quietly by your side, becoming a part of yourself.
Be proud of yourself and of your accomplishment. You prevailed and lived to tell the tale. You beat the odds, you managed what most people are never be able to do. You are on your way to happiness.
It’s never too late, there is always enough time to reach for the shore, always adequate strength for those final meters across the water, to become what you want to be, to get where the Gods will delight in you.
And once you get there, you can be the guiding light for the others. After all you have made it and taken control of your own life, made the chance for better and learned to love yourself, just the way you are.
Like a lighthouse standing tall at the shore, shining it’s loving gentle beam to the ones who still struggle in the darkness, stumbling over stones and branches on their struggle to reach the shore. Watching over the beautiful lake, taking delight in being able to help others to reach the shore and lead them on their final meters into the golden light.
This is a very personal choice. There is no right or wrong way of starting your yoga practice! Some people like to do yoga in the privacy of their home and others like to attend regular classes! A third one might want to participate in a yoga retreat to get going.
You should examine the pros and cons of each method before making your decision. All the methods bear similar costs, membership versus retreat versus setting up your yoga room at home, spread over different amount of time.
How to learn yoga at home?
This is typical choice for people who short of time, having irregular schedules due to for instance shift work or travel a lot. It will be difficult for these people to fit regular yoga classes to their chaotic schedules.
People who live in remote areas also rarely have access to a great yoga studio on the their front door. Yoga is also not equally popular in all parts of the world.
Besides this, there are also people who are struggling with extra weigh or just don’t feel comfortable with their own bodies or feel intimidated about the clumsiness of their initial attempts for yoga poses.
So how does one get started with learning yoga at home? It’s important to have the necessary instructions, equipment and space for the yoga practice.
Setting Up Your Own Yoga Retreat
You can do yoga anywhere, bedroom, living room, garage, garden set or outside on the deck or the lawn. I recommend you will always do yoga at the same place as it helps to establish a habit.
You also need to set aside a quiet place, where are will be able to concentrate.
You should take time for yourself
Make sure you are not distracted by pets or children.
Switch off the sound on all your devices. Calm environment is the key here.
Besides from minimizing the distractions you can do other things to increase your concentration levels in your chosen environment.
Lighting is important, if you do your workout outside, great, but for inside practice I suggest softer and more natural light.
Aromatherapy, with scented candles, insences, or my personal favourite Ayurveda aroma oilsare good aid for creating a pleasant scent which will help you to focus.
Plants are often overlooked, but having living things in your yoga room is going to improve the quality of air and ease your breathing.
Choosing Your Yoga Equipment
Since you will be practicing yoga home, you’ll be needing some yoga equipment. The bare essentials are:
Non slip surface aka Yoga mat. The come in all colors and materials. Take your pick, but it’s best to choose and antibacterial surface to help to keep your mat clean.
Meditation pillow. This is really a must as a beginner is unlike to be able to sit a lotus positions for long time.
Yoga belt. This is an other important piece of yoga equipment if you are stiff and not so flexible.
Meditation timer. I suggest to get a timer, not only for meditation, but for beginners it is often beneficial to increase their flexibility or relaxation by staying in certain position for extended time.
Meditation and relaxation blanket will come in handy as in the state of deep relaxation, our body temperature tends to lower down. Right blanket can also be taken to the beach or the mountain if you decide to take your yoga practice outside.
So that’s it really, you can use as much or as little money on the above articles, according your budget and personal preference.
Forget about the expensive yoga clothing that every sport brand has to offer, what you need is comfortable and none restrictive clothing.
If you are woman, depending on your cup size, you might need to wear a well fitting sports bra.
You might also consider a bag to transport and store your yoga mat, it will probably pay off later on, when you want to take your mat with you on holidays or yoga studio if you decide to join one.
Choosing Your Yoga Program
Since you are going to do yoga home, you will need good guidance in getting started. Yes, there are plenty of videos out there on Youtube, but honestly most of them are rubbish.
Nowadays anyone can upload a video online and claim to be a yoga guru, so you really aught to be careful. For an expert this is easy, I would never trust an instructor who’s own alignment is wrong? But for a beginner this can be a daunting task.
Since you are a beginner, you need to ensure that you learn the correct poses and techniques, to keep you both safe and allowing you to receive the maximum benefits from your yoga practice.
This is why I actually recommend you get started with a good program with qualified and certified instructors, which you can either download or view online.
I have reviewed many programs in my yoga career, but only one, has gained my full approval. You can read my review of their whole program here:
The great thing about this program is that once you gain little bit more experience, you can continue with the same program and advance your practice. It will also help you to select the perfect yoga style for you.
How To Learn Yoga at a Retreat
This is far the most popular way of getting started with yoga. A really good choice indeed!
You will have a holiday at some beautiful destination and you get to meet other people who have the same goal! You get someone to teach you the correct alignment and you’ll be on your way to perfect yoga practice!
Sound perfect, right? But before you pack your suitcase, please read the cons of this approach.
You need to have considerable amount of cash available right away, since most of these retreat costs thousands of euros. You particularly have to be careful in reading the small text to ensure you know what is included. Questions to ask are:
Are flights included? Most of the time the answer is no! This means you have to reserve and pay your own ticket and ground transportation to the destination.
What type of room does the price include? A lot of the time people notice last minute they have to share a room with someone else, or pay a large sum to upgrade to a private room.
Are meals included? Most of the time they are, but not always!
What kind of food does the retreat offer? If you are someone with a paleo diet, you might not want to go to a retreat that only offers Ayurvedic vegan meals.
Are he excursion included? Most of these retreats promise wonderful excursion, but take an extra payment for them.
How many hour of yoga are included per day and are any private sessions included? This is important as you might not get any private time with the teacher except if you are willing to pay for his or her private tuition fee.
Are you religious? Often the yoga retreats spend some time exploring the Hindu traditions of the yoga practice in terms of chanting and rituals. You can read more about the traditional side of yoga in my article about yoga sutras.
Will the instructor be available for any questions after the retreat? It is not often that the yoga teachers will be willing to continue a customer relationship with after the retreat is over, so you might end up with lots of guidance and no answers to your questions.
I would suggest you do your research properly! Please take a look at the large selection of Yoga retreats available at BookYogaRetreat website.
They are a great booking site that have gathered an amazing collection of all sorts of yoga retreats, different style, places and price classes.
How To Learn Yoga at Yoga Studio
You need to make sure you know that not every yoga studio is the same even if it has a good reputation and is led by qualified instructors.
Memberships to quality studios are often very expensive, you save large amounts if you buy a yearly subscription. How ever please consider the following before you purchase one:
Consider your goals! How old are you? How flexible and fit are you? Are you pregnant? Do you want to loose weight? These are all important question deciding what type of yoga will suite you.
Select one that teaches one type of yoga! There are plenty of studios out there teaching everything possible from Pilates to Ashtanga Yoga. In my opinion, the once that concentrate on one style have a better quality.
Make sure their ideology fits yours! Many Yoga centers are spiritual, which is great, that is if you are to and are looking for spiritual inspiration. If not, seek out one that only considers yoga a type of sport.
Don’t make your decision lightly! There are plenty of studios out there, most of them offer some sort of test attendance, use it to evaluate the place and the teachers.
How To Learn Yoga at Private Yoga Sessions
From my personal advice the best way to get going is by first having few private hours with a qualified yoga teacher. This way you are sure you will not get hurt and you will start your yoga practice off the correct way.
It also allows you to examine if yoga really is something you want to start practicing. There are few who cannot get into the flow so to speak and feel afterwards the money they spend to setup their practice was wasted.
This might sound like an expensive approach, but often only few hours are needed to get a good foundation and a yoga routine started, after which you can continue the practice at the comfort of your home.
