Pollen Allergy Remedies That Really Work Fast

Are you looking for pollen allergy remedies that really work and fast? Are you suffering from pollen allergies and are the symptoms making your life a misery every  spring? This article will introduce you to ayurvedic home remedies that work providing fast relief for allergy sufferers.

Are you suffering from headaches, runny nose, swollen eyes and itchy throat? The chances are that you have pollen allergies and they make your life a misery as soon as the trees and flowers start to bloom.

Antihistamines are the most common over the counter medication and they work by calming your body’s immune system reactions against allergens, such as tree pollen. They however tend to make you drowsy, give you rash and even cause weight gain.

Ayurvedic medicine has several allergy remedies that work fast, are safe even for small children and pregnant ladies and have no side effects.

Pollen Allergy Remedies

Our immune system can effectively fight toxins, bacteria and viruses which are a threat to our health. That is if it’s working optimally, when out of balance, it can react too strongly to some environmental substances, such as tree pollen, animal dust or mold.

This reaction wil cause our body to act wanting to get rid of what it recognises as a threat to our health, causing an allergic reaction due to the excessive release of histamine chemical. Histamine in it’s turn can cause sneezing,  nasal congestion, coughing, watery eyes, eczema flare and lead to more serious things such as asthma attacks.

Nettle

nettlesNettle is often considered as a weed, but it really is a wonderful herb, which many amazing prooven anti-inflammatory properties. It also strengthens our immune system in general.

A tea or tincture made from it’s leafs reliefs the allergy symptoms of watery and itchy eyes, sneezing and runny nose. You can also make a soup out of it or use in many dishes instead of spinach. However nettles are best not eaten raw due to their sting!

For any type of remedy, you can use the nettle leaves either fresh or air dry them. Only collect young leaves at spring before the plants flower.

HOT TIP! If your eyes are itching and watering badly, you can wash them out with small amounts of fresh milk, which will ease the redness and itchiness almost immediately.

Peppermint

peppermint essential oilPeppermint has many wonderful abilities and can be used as a tea, essential oil or a tincture. It contains flavonoids that inhibit the activity of anti-inflammatory enzymes, such as histamines and therefore reduce the allergy symptoms.

You can use it as a tea, drink as tincture or diffuse in an aromatherapy diffuser. It is especially effective for astma and nose and airways congestions when used with a water vapour diffuser.
For more information you can read my article about different types of diffusers and find one that suites your needs best.
HOT TIP! You can combine both fresh or dried nettle and peppermint leaves together in a tea, which you should drink three times a day with a spoonful of organic raw honey.

Bee Pollen

Honey Bees

Just like raw organic honey, bee pollen is made my our little busy friends! But I am allergic to pollen you might say, it will make my symptoms worse. Actually in small doses over longer time, it teaches your immune system to get used to and handle the pollen.

Pollen is therefore more a long term remedy or a preventative measure, as you build resistance slowly during the winter and the spring before the pollen season starts. Buy an organic variety and add in small doses looking for any signs of allergic reaction.

Just like honey, this remedy is not recommended for infants. Also do not try this remedy if you have bee allergy or experience severe astma attacks as a result to pollen exposure.

Please also exercise caution with honey and bee pollen if you are nursing, as they can cause reactions in infants. Look for any signs of allergy symptoms and particularly rashes.

HOT TIP! You can mix the pollen into warm milk with a spoon full of honey and drink it in the evening before going to bed. It will double as a powerful sleeping remedy. In the morning you can mix some into your serial or yogurt.

Onion Juice

red onions

Onions are full of powerful antioxidant quercetin, which helps to calm many allergic reactions and also reliefs chronic inflammatory problems such as asthma.

Quercetin also neutralises free radicals, which cause cell damage and therefore it strengthens histamine releasing cells in our body. It is absorbed into the blood stream and provide long term protection for allergies.

Red onions work best for this recipe, as they contain higher quantities of this antioxidant. They are also generally milder and have less strong taste than yellow onions.

You can consume onions in foods, but the best benefits are achieve, when they are eaten raw, although many people prefer not to do this due to their sharp taste.

HOT TIP! Best ways to consume raw onion are as pressed juice or water infused with raw cut onions over night in the fridge.

Apples

Apple flower

Apples are one of natures gifts to the mankind! There is much truth to the old saying:

Apple a day, keeps a doctor at bay!

They contain pectin and vitamin C, which is very good for the immune system, making them one of the best pollen allergy remedies. You can eat them any way you want, raw, juiced or even baked into a delicious pie.

But did you know can also make a delicious tea out of their flowers! You can use either fresh or air dried flowers. You can also try out my delicious apple cinnamon infused water.

HOT TIP! Add a slice of lemon in your apple tea for extra dose of vitamin C or try my lime and ginger infused water.

My Loving Advice

From ayurvedic point of view the sudden high amount of allergens imbalance the doshas. This causes the weakening of the digestive fire agni. We need  to bring the doshas back into balance, which in turn strengthen the agni.

The above remedies are tested over the years in my family, as both of my children were born with bad pollen allergies. Over the years I tested one home remedy after an other, until we got to the point where my children barely notice the allergy season anymore.

I hope you have enjoyed my article pollen allergy remedies and they will help you to get a fast relief for your symptoms. If you have any questions about remedies, have allergies or have your own suggestions, leave me a comment below.

Essential Oils For Concentration and Memory

Students need all the help they can get during the exams to be able to study efficiently.  There are several essential oils for concentration and memory, which when used in a right way create the perfect studying environment.

Have you ever done your best to study, trying to really concentrate and learn something but not been able to stop your thoughts from wondering? Trying to commit something that felt like useless trivia into your memory, only for it to disappear into the thin air before you get the chance to use it?

There are several ways ayurveda can help pupils and students to learn more efficiently by improving concentration and memory. This article deals with the power of essential oils and their aromatherapic benefits for studying.

Essential Oils For Concentration and Memory

There are several essential oils that improve the persons ability to concentrate and memorise things. They can all be used separately or blended together. Additionally other oils can be added to prevent conditions such as headaches and nervousness which are typical for the students during the exam period.

I suggest supplementing a good and nutritious diet, some fresh air and exercise with aromatherapy for the best exam results. Best way to take advantages of the aromatherapeutic effect of the essential oils below, is with a diffuser. You can read more about the various types of essential oil diffusers here:

Different Types of Essential Oil Diffusers

Rosemary Essential Oil

rosemary essential oilThis herb has a sharp scent and it is used besides in aromatherapy in cooking. Rosemary is one of the most efficient essential oils to enhance the memory, it’s called brain and nerve tonic for a reason.

Inhaling rosemary lifts spirits, boosts and stimulates mental activity and fights mental fatigue and boredom, which are both associated with hard studying, as the brain tends to get tired memorising things.

Rosemary also reliefs stress as it has the ability to lower the levels of cortisol, one of the main stress hormones, that cause the flight or fight reaction students often experience in though situations, such as the exams.

Beside its effects for the mind, rosemary is very effective against indigestion, such as cramps and bloating. It also improves immune-system, fighting colds and flues  which are all often a side effects caused by the stress.

Peppermint Essential Oil

peppermint essential oilOne of the most beneficial of the essential oils, this wonderful herb is a perfect mood booster. It helps you to wake up fresh in the morning and beats the fatigues by stimulating your mind.

It helps to reduce stress associated with studying and helps the student to continue studying longer by beating the mental tiredness. Additionally it improves the concentration and has ability to clarify the mind.

I have written a whole separate article about the benefits of peppermint essential oil:

Peppermint Essential Oil – Herbal Health

It is also ophthalmic and perfect for bloodshot eyes caused by studying late into the night.

It’s also very good for treating nervous tension and  providing mental clarity and strength. It is therefore good to be inhaled just before exams. It also relieves melancholy and depression in case some of the results were not as good as expected.

Cypress Essential Oil

cypress essential oilThis herb helps the student to relax and calm down. It has a mild sedative effect on the body and the mind, by relieving anxiety, nervousness and stress. It also reliefs sadness and anger, by stimulating happiness.

It is therefore perfect to inhale in the evening before the student goes to sleep, so the sleeplessness often caused by intense studying doesn’t stop the brain from getting enough rest.

Sage Essential Oil

Aromatherapy and Essential Oil Blends Magic

This article dives into all the aspects of aromatherapy and essential oil blends, their cosmetic, medicinal and therapeutic usage for benefiting the body, mind and soul.

Essential oils have been used in ayurvedic medicine for centuries for their medicinal, cosmetic and aromatic purposes. The term aromatherapy however is fairly recent and was created by the French chemist and perfumer Rene- Maurice Gattefosse. He published a book 1937 which contained his clinical findings about the benefits of essential oils.

Aromatherapy and Essential Oil Blends

Essential oils have been  used in ayurvedic medicine and beauty products for centuries. However one of their most widely accepted uses is aromatherapy, which has turned into big commercial business today.

Aromatherapy is offered by massage and bath oils and scented candles to mention just a few, best ones containing various amounts and qualities of essential oils, others simply synthetic aromas.

Essential Oils and Blends Production

essential oilsEssential oils are concentrated liquids obtained from various parts of the plants, such as leafs, bark, flowers, seeds or roots and contain their aroma compounds in a concentrated form.

There are many methods for obtaining these oils, the price, quality and purity is often dependant on the difficulty of the method, as well as rarity of the ingredients. Flowers in general are very difficult to extract the essential oils from and are therefore among the most precious essential oils.

Here you can order the Master Aromatherapist kit contains 12 pure organic essential oils in a beautiful wooden box. This wonderful handpicked essential oil selection contains:

Master Therapist Essential Oils Collection

Distilling Method

Most essential oils, such as peppermint, lavender ad eucalyptus are distilled. The desired plant parts are crushes and placed in distillation equipment, water is heated and the steam is lead through the plant material. The steam containing the aroma compounds is then condensed back into liquid.

Byproduct, the re-condensed water, such as rose, orange blossom and lavender water is often sold to be used in bath oils and other cosmetics as essential oils.

Solvent extraction Method

Many flowers cannot be expressed since the contain too little oil, but due to their delicate compounds cannot be tolerate the high heat of the distilling process.

In these cases a solvent is used to extract the oils and the result is a mixture of essential oil and resin or wax. This mixture is then again mixed with second solvent, such as ethanol. The solution is chilled to -18C to separate the oil from the other lipids and ethanol is removed in most cases with evaporation and vacuum purge.

Expression Method

Before the distilling became the man methods, expression used to be the only extraction method. Some argue that the essential oils which are produces by this method are more pure and they are preferred for medicinal uses. A higher price can be demanded for them.

Citrus oils, produced from the orange or lemon peel, are examples of essential oils which are expressed manually in mills. Also some rare essential oils, such as ginger oil, are produced from seeds or root are produced using this method.

Medicinal Use Of Essential Oils

Ayurvedic medicine uses essential oils in many of its remedies. They are used to treat everything from curing stomach upsets and indigestion, flu and airway infections, various skin problems to much more serious diseases. They can also be used to balance out the doshas.

The usage of the oils depends on the active ingredients in the essential oil. Some of the most commonly used essential oils in ayurvedic medicine are: ylang-ylang, ginger, peppermint, lavender, rosemary, bergamot, lemon, oregano, cinnamon, eucalyptus, tea tree and frankincense.

There are several different methods for using the essential oils for curing or relieving various conditions. They can be transformed into ointments and oils to be massaged into the skin. They can be consumed in some tea or water. The essential oils can also be added into the bath and washing water or inhaled with the help of water vapour.

Cosmetic Use Of Essential Oils

kimsukadiEssential oils are a key ingredient in all ayurvedic skin creams and oils, shampoos, conditioners and hair oils. Typically pure essential oils are used for face elixirs and blended with waxes or butter for creams and with other oils, such as coconut or almond oil for body oils.

Simply more essential oils are being used for the cosmetic product, more natural and therefore more expensive it is. However these products produced from pure essential oils are also very effective, as they are hand picked for their ability to heal, invigorate and regenerate the skin.

Not all essential oils which are effective for skin care have a pleasant smells and often other essential oils are added to the skin care products for their pleasant smell. Essential oils are also used in ayurvedic hair oils, shampoos and conditioners both for their benefits and the aroma-therapeutic effect.

Take a look at some of the skin care products produced with essential oils, according to the ancient ayurvedic recipes:

Completely Natural Skin Care Products

Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy can be defined as the controlled use of essential oils to maintain and promote physical, psychological, and spiritual wellbeing.”  – Gabriel Mojay

Aromatherapy or Essential Oil therapy, is using the aromatic essences extracted from the plants to heal the body, mind and the spirit. There are many way of using essential oils for aromatherapy.

Aromatherapy works by the vapour penetrating our brains via our nasal cavity. It connects with the areas of the brain that process desires, emotions, memories and appetite, as well as stimulates endocrine glads, which are responsible for regulating our hormone levels.

Perfumes

Probably the oldest form of aromatherapy there is. Perfumes or their diluted forms such as cologne water, are made by combining essential oils, sometimes mixing it to a base, to produce a pleasant aroma. The more rare and exquisite the ingredients, the more expensive the perfume.

These aromas range from sweet to pungent and their fragrance chances once it gets in touch with the skin and it’s own oils. This is the reason why the same perfume smells great on one person while making an other stink awful. Their purposes are to excite, to overpower, soothe, seduce or repel other people, often the opposite sex.

Bath Oils

Aroma Bath

Essential oils are added into other oils, such as almond oil, to produce a bath oil, which is both great for the skin and also provides either a soothing and relaxing or energising and invigorating experience. Few drops of pure essential oil can also be used in the bath water.

Scented Candles

Scented candles are produced by adding a blend of essential oils into the candle wax during the production.  They release aroma into the air when they burn. The aromas can be relaxing or invigorating, setting the mood in the room.

Most scented candles in the market are not produced with real essential oils, but rather with synthesised aromas.

Essential Oil Burners and Diffusers

The essential oil aroma is spread into the room with a help of a warm water dish, an oil burner,  dried grass method or an electrical diffuser either with the help of water vapour of a fan.

You can read more about essential oil diffusers in my article:

What Exactly Is an Aromatherapy Diffuser

Incense

insenceNatural incense, either sticks or cones are made with blending essential oils with combustible base. Incense is burned and the aroma from the essential oils is released into the air, however the combustible component pollutes the air and is harmful for the lungs.

Massage Oils

Essential oils are added into other oils, such as almond oil or coconut oil or ghee to produce a massage oil. Massage with the essential oil is especially powerful as it combines the therapeutic effects of the massage itself, the aromatherapeutic and the medicinal effect of the essential oils used.

The essential oil massage in the hand of a good massage therapist can be invigorating, tension and pain relieving, relaxing or even sensual. You can read about the usage of aromatherapy for lifting a depression in my article:

How To Deal With Depression During Holidays Naturally

Holidays are stressful time even for the ones who’s life is on the perfect track. For the ones, who are suffering from depression, this time of love and happiness is often associate with anxiety and even suicidal thoughts. My article will introduce you into how to deal with depression during holidays using natural methods and techniques. It is dedicated to a friend of mine who suffered from cancer. He passed away 2 years ago on a Christmas Eve to an overdose of painkillers. Nobody knew about his depression and we were therefore unable to help him.

Have you ever felt the anxiety of being in a room full of loved ones happily celebrated and felt completely alone, not being able to catch the festive mood? Let me assure you, you are not alone! Holiday blues is very common!

Or maybe you have just lost a loved one and are facing your first Christmas without this special person. Or maybe this person past away around the holidays, or maybe she or he was essential part of the holiday season and it’s traditions.

You might be facing celebrations alone, having no relatives or friends to share this special time with. Maybe you live far away from your family or you are older and your loved ones have passed away?

My article will teach you 5 powerful ways to learn how to cope with depression during the holiday season. You might try all of them or just pick few, which you find most useful based on my description. However I suggest you give them all some thought for lifting the holiday blues!

1.Exercise and Fresh Air

Going out and doing some exercise, has a wonder effect on lifting the depression. I realize it’s hard to get going, when all you feel like doing is staying in bed all day, but you need to get out!

Exercise produces endorphines, the feel good hormone, in our brain and this feel good hormone will lift the depression in no time. If you are not in a good physical condition, start with walks or perhaps cycling.

Being out and breathing some fresh air also has a wonderful effect in lifting the brain fog, which depression often causes. Therefore I suggest getting out for your exercise session instead of hitting the gym or practicing your sport at home.

MeByTheRiver

Beautiful nature also aids making us feel better, by stimulating our brains visually. Go or a walk in a forest, by the sea shore or a mountain. Find out a beautiful spot somewhere nearby and take a day trip to enjoy the scenery.

Take up yoga! Yoga is a great gentle exercise that teaches the connection of body and mind. You can read my personal recommendations how to get started here:

Starting Yoga Practice – Beginners Guide

You can also read about the benefits of simply doing sun salutations daily in my article:

Warrior II Pose

2.Power of Massage

Massage can help to clear depression! Good massage helps to drain the body of toxins and at the same time it also relaxes both the body and the mind, promoting good general health.

You can book a massage, depending on your location and what’s available near to you, consider an Ayurvedic oil massage. They help to strengthen your immune system, help to overcome fatigue and insomnia, which often are caused of depression!

Ayurvedic massage

If you are unable to find a good massage place nearby, there are several self-massage techniques to be performed on various body parts such as face and feet with good massage oil, that can help you to experience the benefits.

I myself love Kansa Wands for the almost magical effect on reliefind depression, due to the healing combination of the kansa metal and the wonderful technique which helps to sooth sore muscles and revive the skin. You can read my review here:

Kansa Wand Reviews – Too Good To Be True

The article also highlights the best tools, the training materials and the oil to be used with this powerful self-massage technique!

3.Meditation and Deep Relaxation

Meditation and deep relaxation are both great ways of clearing up the skies. They will teach you techniques to relax your mind and get better sleep, as depression often causes sleep deprivation as we cannot let go of our depressive thoughts in order to relax and fall asleep.

Meditation has also a lot of other health benefits, it helps to reduce stress and anxiety, which often are related to depression. Read more about 10 Benefits From Mediation – Ready To Make A Change

Here is my very own deep relaxation meditation. It will take you to the depths of the ocean and join a dive with the blue whales!

If you want to read more about this meditation, please read:

The Guided Deep Relaxation Meditation

it will demonstrate you the correct pose for this meditation and also give you some back ground information on this technique and it’s benefits.

4.Aroma Therapy

Aroma therapy is a very powerful way of relieving depression.  The essential oils have a subtle, yet extremely powerful influence on our mind and body via our sense of smell.

Candles

Aroma therapy can be enjoyed in many different forms, four most commonly know, all with wonderful benefits, are:

  1. Aroma therapy massage – you or a therapist use a massage oil mixed with essential oils to massage various parts of your body. Most common treatments concentrate on the face and the back.
  2. Aroma therapy candles – Make sure to select one with a natural scent as a lot of the scented candles are not produced with essential oils. Safe bets are scents of spices and citrus. As an additional benefit, candles also help to create a relaxing atmosphere.
  3. Aroma therapy bath – a very effective way to let the essential oils to seep into your body via your skin.
  4. Aroma therapy inhalation – three main techniques are used to release the scent of he oils in to the air:
    1. Burner – a candle is used to apply heat to a ceramic dish which contains a mixture of water and essential oil, releasing the scent into the air.
    2. Infuser – mixes water and essential oil and releases it into the air with water vapor, changing the atmosphere of your home.
    3. Inhaling infuser – uses the same strategy as normal infuser, but contains a part where you enter your face and inhale the water vapor intensively for a certain amount of time. This also doubles as a facial sauna and gives you the relaxing benefit of the heat.
    4. Diffuser – speads the aroma into the air. Read about the best aromatherapy diffusers here: What Is The Best Aromatherapy Diffuser Like?

Aroma Bath

I can wholeheartedly recommend this as we humans often associate certain scents with memories. Remember the scent of Christmas from your childhood? Smell of food and freshly baked cookies or mulled wine? The tree, when it was first brought into the house?

Find some memory about a scent that makes you happy and then search for something with that particular odor. You will not even realize how fast it will lift your moods!

5.Choose Happiness

This might sounds like a strange advice to someone who is suffering from depression! However what we must realize is the fact that dwelling in our misery will only serve to make things worse.

Cozy up in front of a fire with a good book or take a relaxing bath! Pamper yourself to a facial treatment or manicure.

Fireplace

There are several positive thinking techniques to learn to deal with negativity and turn things around even during the darkest times. I have a separate article that deals with the fact that happiness really is a choice we must do every day.

I tell my own personal story, how my cancer treatments, combined with a lot of bad luck, got me down to a very dark place and how I was able to overcome it:

What Is Positive Thinking About – Sattvic Mind

My Loving Advice

Spending time with rejoicing family and friends can sounds a chore to someone who is suffering from depression, but by surrounding yourself with people who love you, can help you feel better.

Open up to someone you trust and let them know about your problems, do not suffer in silence. If you feel you cannot talk to someone you know well, which can perhaps feel intimidating, there are several phone lines and centers setup for the holiday season.

Phone Call

If you are alone during the holidays, there are places where you go attend celebrations together with others in the same situation.  The intention is to bring people together not only for the special occasions, but to form friendships that will help you on the long term.

As these are local, I cannot give you a particular service, you you can easily look them up online or in your local news paper. These services are strictly confidential and free, often staffed by volunteers who have been suffering from depression one time in their lives themselves, so they will easily be able to relate to your story.

I hope you follow me advice, because if you do, I guarantee you will get through the holiday season without anxiety and stress which will only deepen your depression.

I would love you hear the thoughts of everyone who either themselves are suffering from depression or know someone who is. I am here for you in case you need someone to talk to! I have been down that road myself many times and will happily share my experiences in overcoming the dark clouds.
