The Lazy aka Time Efficient Route

The Technical Route – How To Build a WordPress Website From Scratch?

technical

So you know something about website programming, great! Then you know exactly what to do. This is what your plan looks like:

  1. You buy a domain
  2. Purchase a hosting platform
  3. Install and setup your database, email server, WordPress and Apache.
  4. Install your plugins
  5. Configure your spam and hacking guards.
  6. Upload the themes you want to use and customize them.
  7. Create your email accounts

In about 1 week you should be on your way to creating some great content! After that, it’s easy going, your environment should only take around half a day of maintenance every week. But hey, you got exactly what you wanted, hopefully!

OK, OK, I lost you there, right? You are an artist and don’t really care that much for technology! It can be very taunting to start building your first website. So let’s examine other ways of of completing this task.

The Outsourcing Website Design and Hosting  Route

OutsourcingYou could take the outsourcing route. Many artists do and at first hand it looks like the easy and perfect solution. I mean all you have to do is:

  1. Find a company to create a website
  2. Explain them what you actually want from a website
  3. Review their design
  4. Find someone else to setup the hosting environment for you
  5. Find someone to take care of the hosting for you
  6. Find someone to teach you how to market your website

Any artist who has tried to route, knows that the steps 1-3 actually become a vicious and costly cycle, which can take really long time to complete.

After all your are trying to explain YOUR vision to someone else, you are a perfectionist! You want your website to reflect YOU and YOUR VISION about this world!

Oh boy, that must be really hard. You see it clearly in your head, can sketch it, paint it, but cannot get someone to understand what you are really after.

The changes are that you will have to either try out several companies to get what you want or accept a result that is below your artistic standards and not exactly what you wanted.

You then have to find at least one other company, if not two, to execute steps 4 and 5. And even then the last task will somehow fall on your because even if you hire a company to make you appear first on the Google search engines for people looking into purchasing art, you are still not guaranteed a commercial success.

How ever the main problem with this approach is that you will be using a lot of money and much longer time than you first anticipated. Hence this approach is not optimal.

  2. Hi Hanna!
I ‘ve been wondering, I am so much into the 3-D art of portrait painter Pabst, who creates 3-D images by hand……
I’m learning to do this myself, would the following be possible:
I create a 3d image on 2d paper, build up a collection, and create a type of e-gallery…..
I make a download of a desired picture possible, and the buyer could print it out.
Of course I’ve thought of all the integrated cuts and the elongation, before scanning into the e-book format, lol…..

What are your thoughts on this idea?
    Thanks so much!
    Cheers,
    Therese

    1. Hi Therese!

where I am planning to upload all my works currently for sale, when I find a moment! It’s built on an e-commerce store called WooCommerce, you can also be use it for creating a downloadable gallery, but there are many others there! You will need a payment system, WooCommerce comes with Paypal system which I am using 🙂

      1. Wow, Hanna, thanks so much!

  3. Thank you so much Hanna, I hope I can call you this? I am an artist myself struggling making an income as I am a traditional painter, not into digitsl arts. I will look into this siterubrix and see if I got what it takes to make a website to sell my art!

    1. Hi Barbara! I feel for you, I was struggling with the same problem myself. Give it a go, I won’t lie to you, it will take some effort to get the result that pleases you, but I am absolutely convinced that this platform is the easiest one around to use!

  4. I took a look at this and it indeed seems like a very easy way to create a website! Totally a dream come true for me as I have no clue of this stuff!

I wonder though, if this service really free or are there any hidden fees? I know you have to pay monthly to host the website, so what are the total costs.

    1. Hi Margot!
Indeed, this is a really great way to make a website. You are right about additional fees of course. You get one week trial and you can get the training and build your website for free. If you chose not to become a premium members, you can still keep your website and move it somewhere else.
If you do want to become a member, you pay 19USD for the first month and after that 49USD per month or 359USD per year. Considering this gets you free hosting of 20 websites and constant support from the community and the technical staff, that’s well worth it!

  5. WOW, is Site Rubix the platform you used to create this website? It’s simply amazing, so much information and amazing pictures 🙂 How long did it take you to get started? I have been wanting to create a website for long time, but never new how to get started since I’m not technical at all!

    1. Yes, I created my website with Site Rubix. To be honest it took me around a week, but this was because I wasn’t able to concentrate on it full time. Of course the content has taken it’s own time, I am averaging to about 3 articles per week.
Site Rubix is so easy to use, you don’t need to be technical all to understand it. Let me know if you are interested in trying it out and I will show you how 🙂
